Music for Mother's Day

I wrote a hub about the song that always reminds me of my mother. It made me think about all the songs out there that  singers and songwriters have penned as a tribute to the loving icon of motherhood.

Here's my selection of songs for mothers.

There are those that sing about the selflessness, the sacrifices. those that sing about the love and compassion. There are regrets and revisits, wishes and wistfulness. There is courage and grief, inspiration and intensity.

There are some written directly about mothers and some that inspire emotions about motherhood.

They may have rocked with their anodyne Pop ballads and 'out-there'- chic. They have been sporty, baby, posh, ginger and scary but like any girl - Spicy or otherwise- knows eventually, mama is your best friend.

The Boyzone lead singer had a special relationship with his mother and penned this song as a tribute to her. In fact he released a whole album, songs for my mother.

If ever there was a song written to celebrate motherhood, it is this one. With its powerful, emotional lyrics and sweeping emotions... No one can beat Bette Midler in those soaring lyrics.

Love her or hate her, you can deny the power of a Celine Dion ballad. Especially poignant is this one saying Goodbye to her mother.

It is never too late to Thank your mom for all the things she has done, for being there through thick and thin, for nurturing, nourishing and selflessly catering to our needs. Good Charlotte, say it well...

Who can forget the little baby face of Jimmy Osmond singing the 'mother of mine'. Welsh Singer Hayley Westenra has done a melodic cover version that also  truly inspires.

The tragic life of talented 2Pac, cut short in his prime by the very gangsta culture that inspired his songs, is not without regrets and remissions to his mother. He was insightful, intriguing and iconic.

These beautifully rendered lyrics reveal the artist reveal the social injustice, cultural influences and the poverty that produced him and the 'boys'.

The beautiful Christine Aguilera can ballad with the best of them. Her vocal range carries this song written as a tribute to motherhood soaring into the airwaves.

And when I'm down you're there pushing me to the top.

You're always there givin' me all you've got.

For a shield from the storm,

The handsome quartet of Il Divo melted many a mother's ( and their daughters!) hearts with their renditions of classical and the contemporary. Here's there tribute to Mama

This beautiful song from Martina McBride captures that special mother daughter relationship so well.
