Poem: Forever Nights
77
Of lost loves and forever nights
I remember vividly the pangs of lost love.
Just as thriving love feeds the muse of poetry, the pangs of loss does inspire many songs too.
There is something about lost love that bends the space and time, skews logic, warps your senses and yet still lures like an addicts opium. There is something about lying in bed, curled up, face buried in a tear stained pillow, yearning that seems so sad yet alluring.
Are we really missing what once was? Are we missing what it could have been? Or are we hoping for what it will be?
There are countless souls out there, pining, wringing, singing of lost love.
Thought I would join them in a soulful chorus....
The simple lack of her is more to me than others' presence.
Edward Thomas
Absence weakens mediocre passions and increases great ones,
as the wind blows out candles and kindles fires.
Francois de la Rochefoucauld
And ever has it been known that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.
Khalil Gibran
Forever Nights
Pillows don’t cushion the thoughts that do fall
I lost you behind a dark looming wall
Will my heart’s love ever stand proud and tall
As it did when you still loved me in all
Raindrops and roses do whisper to me
Nights voices speak and won’t let me be
My eyes do look but don’t always see
I’m not in shackles but I don’t feel free
Hope you are fine in all that you do
Hope you are loved and listened to
Hope your head carries worries few
Hope you still are the you that I knew
I caught your reflection in mirror glass
Places still show me what once there was
Thoughts of you grip me and won’t let me pass
Time warps and space bends when we feel a loss
Is there a trace of me in your loving heart?
A place where memories of me still have a part
Is there still my rusty, bent cupid’s dart
Or am I just specks of dust so far apart
Hope you are fine in all that you do
Hope you are loved and listened to
Hope your head carries worries few
Hope you still are the you that I knew
Fragile is my hope that still seems to cling
Like dewdrops on glass blades come early spring
Is this a futile dream and what will it bring
More than a sad old song I seem to sing
It is better to have loved and lost whoever said
Has not had nights like this twisted in bed
Even though it seems so completely bled
How come my lonely heart still rules my head?
Hope you are fine in all that you do
Hope you are loved and listened to
Hope your head carries worries few
Hope you still are the you that I knew
Hope you are fine in all that you do
Hope you are loved and listened to
Hope you still nurture loving thoughts few
Of this fool who somehow still loves you....

Exquisite longing...The line that stopped me, that I had to read again and again is "Thoughts of you grip me won't let me pass"...so visceral, yet physical. It is my favorite line. The quote by Edward Thomas "The simple lack of her is more to me than others' presence". Yes, that's the ticket...that is how I want the love of my life to feel about me. This is longing so powerful that it moves me to tears. And as much as I adore the quote by Edward Thomas, your piece leaves his words in the dust.
This poem is absolutely exquisite. This just grabbed my heart and squeezed.

Lovely! The repeated chorus: Hope you are fine . . . is so positive.
Shows that you truly care even though you are hurt.
Wow, i dont know what to say, this hits home in so many ways. Ive loved and lost several times, 2 that hurt the most, was guys who didnt love me back, lead me on, lied to my face, and betrayed me. yet for so long i still loved them, still hung on, still cried over what was, what could have been, longing for a second chance, when they didnt deserve it. ive been through the twisted pain of nights like this, and i know it is much better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all, because even though it ended horribly, there was good times, and that feeling of complete happiness once upon a time, even if it got ripped away, in that moment that was all that mattered, and you learn from your mistakes, you learn your own flaws from being with someone like that, and you learn to love again, love can be broken, but it can be brought up again, the heart heals, and we have to go through bad things to appreciate the good when it comes for all that it is. great hub. I love this quote: "The simple lack of her is more to me than others' presence."
Edward Thomas
For so long i had felt that way about a guy. for a year i waited for him to come to his senses, and i got a second chance, but it also did not end well. but i did not want anyone but him, didnt even think about other guys, though he wasnt even around, the lack of him was more than anyones presence. im glad to say we are on good terms now and can be friends, and i wouldnt trade any of my past heartaches for anything in the world, because it led me to wear i am today and brought me together with my current boyfriend whom i love though he drives me up a wall. lol
Good hub. voted up.
I think most of us out in hub land, have had this heart break. Your poetry brings the reader right with you in this state of pain and sadness of lost love. What a great song and video. Brings me back to a huge crush I had with a guy when I was in 8th grade. This was our song. Thanks:)
Very beautiful Docmo. I can relate. The song seems like a Marvin Gaye song.
Cheers
"... hope you still are the you that I knew." Those nine little words, Docmo, sum up all the tenderness and longing of your brilliant poem for me. Thank you.
He's sad, but not angry...love the chorus...hope you are fine in all that you do, la la la...that shows true love to let go with good wishes for the other person...quite beautiful Docmo...the Kahlil Gibran quote may be short but is felt a million miles in my heart having lost my hubby a year and a half ago...
A very tender and sincere poem, I liked it a lot. I must have; it has brought tears to my eyes... One line I think is superb:
"Is there still my rusty, bent cupid’s dart"
and the verse:
"It is better to have loved and lost whoever said
Has not had nights like this twisted in bed
Even though it seems so completely bled
How come my lonely heart still rules my head?"
So gently cynical.
Forever Nights is a beautiful, heart-touching song. Love is so precious especially Eros between a man and a woman. When it dies - and it really can, though able to be awoke again - it is a tragedy to mourn for as long as we live. The few loves I buried in my life rest in peace in the graveyard of my memory, and yet I am still, sometimes, mourning them, asking myself 'what if that one or this one was still alive'. I give you 100% for this one, Docmo. It touched the bottom of my heart.
I'm a sucker for love poems and romance. This song brought back memories as it was popular in my high school days. Thanks :)
Beautiful poem one that will be forever in my memory. I enjoyed your poem. Thanks for sharing it. Voted up.

My dear poetic friend, your words fall like soft rain on my heart. Beautiful. How are you? Yes, I remember this song...nice addition.
I like it. The romantic one. About real love...even after breaking up. "Hope that you are fine" is the most sensitive moment.
